Liars

Have you ever met an abuser who didn’t lie? I haven’t.

King David wrote the Psalms — he’s one of my favorite authors in the bible. Here’s what he said about liars,

You love every harmful word, O you deceitful tongue!

psalms 52–4

David, more than a king, was a warrior, singer, poet and a man of God. He knew that liars would not ultimately be successful. Their schemes are easy to spot because most of them sound uniquely the same. Their stories too good to be true, they lead the innocent away from the truth.

David continues:

Here now is the man that did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others.

verse 7

Have you ever known someone who grew strong by destroying others? I have.

In the end, God’s people win. They just do. Liars will be silenced and their games end.

Don’t believe that your abuser is stronger than you. The older I get, the more I see them fall. The decay of their wickedness takes them down. In the beginning they seemed to win, grow stronger and convince bystanders of their innocence. But, that just doesn’t last.

King David compared himself in this scripture to an olive tree flourishing in the house of God. Ancient Hebrews honored the olive tree as “king of trees” and considered it a symbol of beauty, virility, prosperity and divine blessing.

I acknowledge God as the source of my strength and fruitfulness. I win!
