Fear Not Friday | Do you blame God?
King David wrote the Psalms. In Psalms 39 verse 10 he says to God, “But please stop striking me! I am exhausted by the blows from your hand.” (NLT). Just because David blamed God for his suffering doesn’t mean that God mistreated him.
Coming through years and years of suffering, not understanding or even beginning to see the truth, I too blamed God for much of the wrong in my life. Instead of leaning into biblical truths, I allowed the voice of my abuser to stay in my mind — to guard my heart, if you will.
An abuser guarding my heart? Yes! If I was blaming God for their actions that is precisely what I was doing. Listening to their voices, their shame — allowing their miserable mistreatment of me. Why? Because I hadn’t learnt better — YET!
God gives all men and angels free will. Remember Satan — yeah, he had free will to choose to fight God. That’s the battle we are all still in.
So, back to blaming God.
Our question as we grow is why God, why? Why didn’t you stop the abuse? Why did you allow it? We then reason that if he didn’t stop the abuse from happening, he is the one allowing it.
This is an absolute lie. God does not and cannot cause evil. Read that again — God cannot cause evil. Choice is what causes evil. The choice of the person that abused you caused the evil. The choice you now have to blame God is the same ability to choose. Choosing is a gift from God but it is the person choosing that we must blame. Not God.
There will be a day when every man must stand before the living Creator. We will then be accountable for every choice we’ve made in life. So, next time you want to blame God for the actions of man — remember God didn’t do it but he did allow choice.
