Break the cycle even if it means you can’t break bread

The holidays are a particularly stressful time to try and set boundaries around specific issues with dysfunctional families.

So many will just choose the path of least resistance.

I’ve known people to shake hands and break bread with my father, a known pedophile.

Breaking cycles and patterns of behavior is hard. It takes courage and grit and unwavering determination to protect & heal.

Most will just stick their head in the sand and continue the patterns…and will fight hard anyone who tries to show them the truth.

Over time, families begin to revolve around maintaining the status quo of dysfunction.

Rigid family roles develop in dysfunctional families that help maintain the dysfunctional family system and allow the abusers to keep abusing.

For some, the idea of sitting around a table and pretending everything is just fine is perfectly palpable. But for many others, this is just too much to ask.

Don’t talk. Don’t feel. Don’t trust. Are the unspoken rules of so many toxic families.

Break the cycle even if it means you can’t break bread.
