Absolution
Teachers like Joyce Meyer and Beth Moore promote a form of absolution to sexually abusive parents. I would argue that absolution is not theirs to give.
ab·so·lu·tion
/ˌabsəˈlo͞oSHən/
Formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment.
Definition from oxford language
It goes on to say, “an esslesiastical declaration of forgiveness of sins. Used in a sentence, “the priest administered absolution.”
No man holds this form of authority. It is Gods alone.
There is so much chatter within religious circles about forgiveness. Almost to the point of piety or self-righteouness. As if to say, “Aren’t I so good.” My aim is not to be good but Godly — and I assure you there is a big difference.
Forgiveness is a God-given ask. That is a foundational truth of the bible. Jesus gave us an example of how we should pray. It’s simple really: 1) Honor God and release His kingdom and will to come to earth as it is in heaven; 2) ask for daily provision; 3) forgive others as we’ve been forgiven; and 4) and to steer us away from temptation.
I don’t see the provision that we can grant a formal release to a pedophile and remove their punishment. It’s not biblical. Furthermore, I would argue that this is encapsulating the very wound that God is trying to restore in the victim.
Jesus (God in human form) said: “”The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy).” That’s HIS job not ours.
He can pardon — we cannot. It’s not our job. To forgive, yes. Pardon, no!
“Father I come before you today and ask that you would show the person reading this the distinction of the two (pardon v. forgivness). I know you would never ask a sexually abused person to now turn to their abuser and give them a full pardon. That’s not how it works and you don’t ask that of us. Holy Spirit, make it clear to the wounded-hearted person reading this that you love them, that you will guide them into all truth and that they can give the pedophile over to you. You know what to do next with that relationship. Father, speak words of kindness to the person coming thru incest. Speak gently into their spirit that their warfare is over, that they will receive blessings from your hand. Set them free and release them from the ugly spirit of religion.
In your mighty name. Amen.”
