A Pierced Heart
It’s tragic to watch the heart of the innocent long for the protection and love of their abusers.
Tragedy lives in the soul of those that cannot break free from this.
This kind of darkness pierces your heart and doesn’t let go. It wants to drain the life out of you.
I was talking with a woman the other day that was abused by her father. She said, “I love him. You know, Jodie. I love him.”
I do know. I also know it’s a false love, a pretense for darkness that stays woven into our being.
The design of true love is crafted differently. Love should not be complicated, nor wrought with destruction. Love is pure. Love has tones of innocence dancing through it.
Love conquerors all things.
Not true of the love/anger dance with our abusers. It’s riddled and racked with destructive ways that tear at us. That love bond never leaves us satisfied, but longing for more: more acceptance, more kindness, more attention — I could go on and on here.
The abusive love dance strangles us and, I believe, it’s meant to. The imprints abusers leave with us aren’t meant to strengthen us, but to deplete us. Their bonds are meant to take our power away, not empower us.
Think about it?
What abuser wants you strong?
None of them do.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38–39
This is the love I contend with today. It’s easy, it’s mine and I don’t have to fight for it.
